Project 1
For project one, I choose to look into the opioid and heroin crisis. I choose this because I have a personal attachment to the topic. My 19 year old cousin, Nate, died in February of 2017 due to a heroin overdose. This horrifying event persuaded me to create a website explaining what happened to my cousin and make people aware of the ongoing issue and just how serious these deathly drugs can be. To visit the website I created visit the site below
EnglishFor the English portion of my project I created a personal poem. I started out with a narrative poem all about my feelings and opinions on missing Nate. After creating the poem, I realized there were thoughts and ideas all over the place. I wanted to clean in up so I met with my English teacher, Mr. Ward. He helped me realize that a narrative wasn't the correct style of poetry that fit my project. He suggested I interviewed my family and write about their feelings and memories about Nate. This seemed like a great idea to me so I went for it. I interviewed my sister, mom, older cousin, and my cousin, who was also Nate's sister. After interviewing them, I took bits and pieces of what they said and formed it into a stanza. Each person has their own stanza in my poem, including me. I feel like my poem was a great way to capture the intense feelings I was looking for. I showed contextualization with my whole poem using the words my family members said. I also created a google doc explaining the contextualization and meaning behind every stanza.

ArtFor the art portion of my project I decided to create a graphic design and place it on a t-shirt. This portion of my project took me the longest to brainstorm. I was so unsure of what meaningful design I could place on a t-shirt to make people want to learn more about my topic. After meeting with my art teacher, Mr. Grandi, many times I finally decided to pick soothing that reminded me of Nate in his purest state. One memory that really stuck out to me was our huge family vacation when we were kids. We went on a family cruise, therefore. I made my design an outline of a cruise ship with six ___ to represent each of Nate's cousins. I showed contextualization by making the different lengths represent our ages and the different colors represent everyones favorite colors. I picked this design because it would make people wonder what it meant and visit my website. I also showed contextualization in making the shirt color purple for overdose awareness and the text color green to represent Nate and his favorite color.

Social StudiesFor the social studies portion of my topic I created two tabs on my website explaining the background of the crisis and how the government is trying to fix the problem. I went into detail about the government providing first responders with naloxone, a medication to help someone on the verge of a drug overdose. I also interviewed my family and friends on how they think the community could help this international issue. I show contextualization in the ONA's at the end of my research. I connects Nate's death to what steps our community is now taking to decrease the amount of drug overdose deaths.
